Small Leadership Shifts for Big Results

Leadership isn’t just about hitting targets or delivering results. At its core, it’s about creating an environment where people feel valued, heard, and empowered to do their best work. Many leaders instinctively focus on performance metrics, thinking they are the ultimate measure of success. But here’s the truth: The path to high performance runs directly through people.

The Story of Two Cultures: A Tale of Two Baristas

Simon Sinek tells a story that perfectly illustrates this point. Noah, a barista, worked at two very different hotels. At the Four Seasons, his managers made it a habit to check in with him regularly—not just about work but about how he was doing as a person. They made him feel valued and supported, creating an environment where he thrived. Noah loved his job and went above and beyond for every customer.

Contrast this with his experience at another hotel, where managers barely acknowledged him. They only spoke to him when something went wrong, and their focus was solely on the bottom line. Unsurprisingly, Noah’s performance at that job was lackluster. He clocked in, did the bare minimum, and clocked out. Why? Because the culture didn’t inspire him to care.

Small Shifts, Big Impact

The difference between these two experiences wasn’t in the policies or procedures—it was in the leadership. At the Four Seasons, Noah’s managers didn’t just lead with strategies; they led with connection. They understood that performance isn’t something you demand—it’s something you cultivate.

So, what does this look like in practice? Here are three simple ways leaders can create a people-centered culture:

1.   Check-In with Intention - Don’t just ask, “How’s it going?” Dive deeper. Try questions like:

  • “What’s something you’re proud of this week?”
  • “Is there anything you feel stuck on that I can help with?”

These conversations show your team you care about their growth, not just their output.

2.   Celebrate Small Wins - Recognition isn’t just about awards or bonuses. A quick “Thank you for stepping up today” can shift the entire energy of your team. Celebrate the process, not just the results.

3.   Model the Behavior - You Want to See Your actions set the tone for your team. If you rush through meetings, your team will feel rushed. If you take time to pause, listen, and reflect, they’ll mirror that behavior.

Why It Matters

Culture isn’t built in one grand gesture—it’s shaped in the micro-moments of daily leadership. Every email you send, every meeting you host, and every casual hallway conversation contributes to the environment you create.

As we approach the end of the year, take a moment to reflect: Are your leadership habits creating the culture you want? Are you fostering an environment where your team can thrive? If not, now is the perfect time to make small shifts that lead to big results.

What’s one small leadership habit you can adopt today to end the year on a high note? Remember, when you invest in your people, performance naturally follows.
